Fire Prevention Week Reminds of the Importance of Fire Safety
Stop, drop, and roll into fire safety. Each year, the National Fire Protection Association recognizes Fire Prevention Week as a time to educate the public on what is necessary to keep them and their families safe from fire. As Fire Prevention Week 2019 approaches – October 6-12 – we take a closer look at three things you should be aware of and have in place to protect yourself and your family in the event of a fire occurring.
- Working Smoke Alarms on Every Floor and in Every Bedroom
It is extremely important that you have a smoke detector on every level of your home and inside every bedroom. But even more importantly, you should ensure that each alarm works by testing it at least once a month. You can look at the back of each alarm for the date it was put into effect and if it is more than 10 years old, you will need to purchase new ones. Finally, be sure that you and your children understand what noise your smoke alarm makes so that you all can easily recognize it should it sound.
- Home Fire Escape Plan
If your smoke detector goes off, it is important to have a way of getting outside of the home. That’s why your family should have a home fire escape plan in place. This includes identifying two ways out of every room and being sure your children understand how to use both. You will also need to make sure that your plan includes a meeting place outside and that you perform a fire drill at least two times per year. Practicing is one of the best ways to ensure that your whole family can be safe in the event of a fire.
- Know to Call the Fire Department
Finally, once your family is safely outside of the home, the fire department needs to be called immediately to help battle the flames and prevent further damage from occurring. Be sure that everyone knows how to call the fire department and that they know to stay outside if the smoke alarm should sound.
