Use This Tool to Compare Nursing Homes Based on Deficiency Reports

When deciding on a nursing home or care facility to place your loved one in, it can be difficult to determine which to choose. Fortunately, there is a tool that can help you make the right decision.

The Nursing Home Inspect Tool

Developed by ProPublica, the Nursing Home Inspect tool aids families across the U.S. by serving as a resource to compare facilities. It does this by comparing a number of areas, including:

  • The number of fines imposed on the facility;
  • The amount of money in fines imposed on the facility;
  • The number of deficiencies that regulators have cited throughout the last three inspection cycles on the facility;
  • The number of “serious deficiencies” per home, where patients were put in danger of immediate harm; and
  • The frequency in which the government has suspended payments to the facility for new patients.

The data used for these reports is provided by the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

With 217 nursing homes throughout the state of Connecticut, 24 of which have serious deficiencies, and nine with payment suspensions, it is not surprising that there has been $2.32 million paid in penalties. The government has already flagged one of our state’s nursing homes as having a history of serious quality issues, while four others currently meet the criteria to be flagged as the same, though they have not yet been.

If you would like to see how a nursing home in CT compares to others, you may access the tool here.
