Local Police to Crack Down During Distracted Driving Awareness Month
Car accidents caused by distracted drivers kill more than nine Americans—and injure 100 more —every day. That is why the National Safety Council (NSC) recognizes April as Distracted Driving Awareness Month. In April, the NSC encourages all of us to recognize the dangers of distracted driving.
Enforcement Hits Home
Closer to home, the Southington Police Department will be enforcing state and local laws against texting and other forms of distracted driving in April. Their annual “U Drive. U Text. U Pay.” campaign runs from April 11th through April 15th this year. The department hopes heightened enforcement will help raise awareness of the dangers of distracted driving. An article on the campaign appears here.
Violating laws against distracted driving in Connecticut is costly. First-time offenders face a fine of $150. A second offense carries a fine of $300—while each subsequent offense will cost drivers $500. In a construction zone, those fines are doubled. Southington Police—in support of the NHTSA and Distracted Driving Awareness Month—urge drivers to stay off their phones behind the wheel.
Research into the Problem
The Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) have recently released the results of a survey conducted on distracted driving in the U.S. According to their results, cellphone manipulations have increased 57% percent over previous surveys. Additionally, the total number of motorists seen using cellphones increased from 2.3 percent in 2014 to 3.4 percent in 2018.
