CT Joins 38 Other States in Investigation of JUUL Marketing

Connecticut has joined 38 other states in conducting a national investigation of the marketing efforts of e-cigarette maker, JUUL Labs, Inc. JUUL, which controls seventy-five percent of the vaping product market, has been the subject of scrutiny and conflict for its notorious advertisements seemingly targeting young people.

Although JUUL claims that this is not the company’s intention and that it doesn’t want underage users, many find that hard to believe considering its bright-colored ads featuring young, “hip” looking people, and candy-flavored vaping cartridges and pens.

Additionally, research has shown that the number of Connecticut youth who engage in vaping has grown about 20-30 percent over the last few years.

Survey Shows Impact of JUUL Marketing

In a 2019 survey conducted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), more than five million youth reported having used e-cigarettes within a 30-day window. This number is up from 3.6 million in 2018. The majority of respondents of the survey also referenced JUUL as their usual brand of choice.

The 39-state probe will take a close look at JUUL’s claims pertaining to risks, safety, and nicotine content. Among those leading the investigation is Connecticut. Connecticut began its own investigation last July, looking at the effectiveness of JUUL’s products at helping with smoking cessation as the company has claimed.

According to JUUL spokesman, Austin Finan, JUUL ended the sale of its flavored pods (except for tobacco and menthol) this past November, as well as its TV, print, and digital advertising. Instead, the 5-year-old company has executed a $1 billion restructuring plan. “We will continue to reset the vapor category in the U.S. and seek to earn the trust of society by working cooperatively,” he told CNN.
